The children: Circumcision The intervention that is proposed consists in removing the foreskin from the penis. This operation is better known under the term circumcision but this word is used in principle for interventions performed for religious purposes. Why this action? The foreskin is a fold of skin that covers and protects the glans. It may be indicated to remove it in several circumstances:- narrowing of the foreskin preventing retraction called phimosis: this phimosis is either of congenital origin or scarring- skin disease of the glans and/or foreskin Lack of treatment exposes at the risk of urinary and sexual difficulties, infection and inflammation of the skin of the foreskin, glans and urethral meatus. In particular, a paraphimosis may occur, which corresponds to a strangulation of the glans by the preputial ring due to the impossibility of recoating. Are there other possibilities? Some congenital phimosis that is not too tight can benefit from medical treatment by application of corticosteroid-based ointment. A simple enlargement plasty without removal of the foreskin can be proposed in certain cases. Preparing for the intervention As with any surgery, a pre-operative anesthesia consultation is required a few days before the operation. The intervention takes place under general, loco-regional or local anesthesia. Surgical technique The intervention consists of removal of the foreskin which leaves the glans uncovered, more or less completely. Most often the frenulum is cut and sutured during the operation. Stitches are placed between the skin of the sheath of the penis and the glans.
